A brick reading house added to a 1930s branch library, lit from above through a sawtooth roof.

The original library had run out of room for its busiest use: people who come to sit and read. The annex adds one tall reading hall, connected to the old building by a glazed bridge at first-floor level.

Its walls are laid in a pale, hand-struck brick chosen to sit beside the older red brick without copying it. Light comes from north-facing roof glazing, so the hall stays even and glare-free through the day.
